  • Another bulk item store,Ohana Wholesale, will opening in November. The new
    store will be located on Ala Malama Avenue, between Kalele Bookstore and Molokai
    Artists and Crafters Guild
  • A new store called the "Store-House" has opened (late October) in the former
    Mango Mart on Ala Malama Avenue.  They will offer family-sized items, in household,
    personal and grocery variety, as well as fresh deli sandwiches and snacks
  • Paddler’s Inn Bar and Restaurant reopens in September under new ownership.

  • Father Damien Canonization
    Damien de Veuster, SS.CC. (January 3, 1840 – April 15, 1889), born Jozef de
    Veuster and also known as Blessed Damien of Molokai, will be canonized on
    October 11, 2009 at a ceremony in the Vatican in Rome, Italy. St. Sophia Church in
    Kaunakakai will televise the ceremony live on a big-screen TV, at around 10 P.M.
    Molokai time. People are invited to join in this unique event. Bring lawn chairs and
    even some sweet bread to share. Festivities continue on October 31, when church
    dignitaries will bring a relic of Farther Damien to Molokai for a series of events.
    The relic will be transported from the airport to St. Joseph's Church at Kamalo for a
    prayer meeting, then on to Our Lady of Seven Sorrows at Kalua'aha. Both churches
    were built by Father Damien and his flock. Finally, the relic will repose at St. Sophia
    in K’kai, where a prayer meeting will be held. Times for these prayer meetings are
    not set yet, but will be announced when the arrival of the relic is determined. On
    November 1, the relic will be carried down the trail to Kalaupapa for a private,
    invitation-only ceremony.
    On Saturday, November 7, a Damien Parish Country Fair will be held at the Mitchell
    Pauole Center in K’kai, including a Country Store, Baked Goods, Auction and
    delicious food. For more information or to make a donation of cash or of an auction

    from the event benefit the Damien Church Building Fund.

  • State Tax Increase for owners that rent their units.  Rental Tax (TAT) increases from
    7.25% to 8.25% on July 1, 2009 and to 9.25% on July 1, 2010, as passed on May 8,
    2009, Act 61,SLH2009.
  • Paddler's Inn closes in June.  
  • Kumu Farms (808) 567-6480 has opened an organic, fresh produce stand at their
    farm location selling more than just great papayas.  Fresh, farm grown produce is
    also available.  Did you know that you can ship or take an "export box" of farm grown
    papayas home to yourself and/or your friends?
  • Mango Mart has closed it's doors effective Saturday, April 4, 2009.
  • Budget and Alamo Car Rentals will no longer be servicing Molokai.  Rentals cannot
    be booked on-line after May 1, 2009.  Budget will be renting cars in May on a first
    come first served basis.  Both car rental companies will be closing by May 31st.

  • Alamo Car Rental will be the only car rental company servicing the airport.  
    Reservations may be made on-line now with Alamo for reservations starting June 1,
    2009.
  • West End Sundries at Kaluakoi closed its doors in March.
  • Touch of Molokai, at the west end, has started selling snacks, drinks, ice cream
    and other foods and is open daily from 9am to 5pm.
  • Molokai Artists & Crafters Guild, a Gallery & Gift Shop, have moved their location
    from above the American Savings Bank into part of Takes Hardware's previous
    location (next door to Misaki's).
  • The new Molokai Minimart (across from Takes Hardware) is open 7:00 a.m. to 11:00
    p.m. Monday-Saturday and 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m..  They also offer very
    inexpensive Internet access on large screen monitors and computer printing.
